SUMMARY:Why do humans behave the way they do?
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nHave you ever wondered what drives people to do the things they do? Why do we sometimes do things that we know we shouldn’t\, or don’t even want to? Everything we think and do is the product of our brains. But how do brain processes influence our behaviour\, and affect our choices\, thoughts and feelings? \nWe are thrilled for our next DCCQ Presents event\, presented by  two leading professors in their field\, Prof Dr Frans Verstraten & Prof Dr Hinze Hogendoorn. The highly anticipated presentation is organised by the Dutch Chamber of Commerce\, in partnership with the Maltese\, Spanish and Swedish Chambers of Commerce.\nThank you to MinterEllison as our event host and sponsor. \nWe all work with people. Whether this is directly with customers (e.g. marketing\, sales)\, with employees (e.g. HR\, management)\, or with other stakeholders (e.g. government\, PR)\, understanding how and why people behave the way they do is invaluable in any workplace. Are you curious to learn more about how our brain works\, what drives humans and makes them do what they do? Join us on a tour through the fascinating world of human behaviour\, learn more about others (and yourself)\, and take away tangible tools to apply in your everyday work. \nProf Dr Frans Verstraten\nFrans studied Experimental Psychology at Radboud University and earned a PhD cum laude from Utrecht University. After postdoctoral roles in Canada\, the USA\, Japan\, and a visiting professorship in Toronto\, he became a professor at Utrecht University in 1999. He later led the Helmholtz Institute and now serves as the McCaughey Chair of Psychology at the University of Sydney. Frans has headed the School of Psychology for 10 years and is editor-in-chief of Perception and i-Perception. He also served as president of the Vision Sciences Society from 2013–2014. \nProf Dr Hinze Hogendoorn\nHinze is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at QUT and leads the TimingLab\, exploring how the brain creates real-time conscious experiences. With a PhD from Utrecht University\, he has held research roles at University College London\, Harvard\, and the University of Melbourne. Awarded the Australian Research Council’s prestigious Future Fellowship\, he now combines neuroscience and psychology to help others understand the roots of human behavior. \n\nVenue Host and Sponsor\n \n\nBook Your Seat\n Friday\, 21 February\n 7.00am for a 7:15am start\n MinterEllison\, Water Front Brisbane\, Level 22\, 1 Eagle Street\n \n💲   Cost: $35 (DCCQ Members $15) \nBOOK NOW\n  \n

Wonder no longer! The Dutch Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with other Dutch community organisations for an afternoon of learning the fine art of making bitterballen hosted by Bart Lommerse of the Borrelclub. The ragout used for the making of our bitterballen will be prepared in advance as this needs to sit in the fridge overnight for the most delicious bitterballen. This is optional to attend. You can still make come and learn to make bitterballen without attending the showcase.\n1.30-1.45pm: Introduction to participating Dutch community organisations\n1.45-4pm: Making and cooking the bitterballen and off course taste testing our delicious creations\n\nYou will go home with a recipe\, so you can reproduce the bitterballen at home to impress your family and friend at your next gathering \nThere are limited spots available\, and we recommend registering for this event as soon as possible. SUMMARY:Dutch Maritime\, Military\, Migration\, and Mercantile History in Australia
DESCRIPTION:Event description\n\nDr. Nonja Peters will explore the rich maritime\, World War II military\, post-war migration\, and trade (mercantile) heritage—collectively referred to as the “Four Ms”—that connect the Netherlands and Australia. This historical relationship began in 1606 when Captain Willem Janszoon and his crew aboard the VOC ship Duyfken made the first recorded European contact with the Great Southland\, landing on the western side of the Cape York Peninsula in present-day Queensland. Additionally\, four VOC shipwrecks were discovered along the Western Australian coast between 1629 and 1727\, further solidifying these early maritime connections. \nDuring World War II\, the American\, British\, Dutch\, and Australian Command (ABDACOM) forces were allied\, while the Administration of the Dutch East Indies (NEI) operated in exile at Camp Columbia in Wacol\, Brisbane. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Peters will delve into the Four Ms\, discussing the lasting collaborative efforts between the Netherlands and Australia to preserve and honour this shared history. \nFrom the mid-1970s to the early 2000s\, Dutch\, Italian\, and Greek migrants in Australia had the highest business profiles among all migrant groups\, showcasing the significant impact of migration on Australia’s post-war economic development. \nThe presentation will follow the AGM of the Dutch Australian Cultural Centre and will be delivered live from Perth\, projected on a large screen at the Brisbane venue. After the presentation\, a discussion with Dr. Peters will be moderated by Paul Budde\, who will also provide an update on the heritage plans for Camp Columbia\, Wacol\, where the Netherlands East Indies Government in exile was based during WWII. Feel free to join the AGM\, which starts at 5pm. \nThe venue is a 3 minute walk from Roma Street Station\, paid parking is also available. \n\nFREE BOOKING\nWe look forward to seeing you on the 16th!
