SUMMARY:Archerfield Airport History: Presentations & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Invitation to WWII presentations and tour of the Archerfield Airport Heritage Room \nOrganised by Dutchlink Brisbane on 22 July from 2pm till 4pm \nArcherfield Airport has recently opened a Heritage Room in their historic Art Nouveau Arrival Hall. It provides a great pictorial overview of its rich history. \nArcherfield Aerodrome was Brisbane’s commercial airport from 1931 until 1949. It is linked to a number of historic flights by aviation pioneers such as Charles Kingsford Smith and Lores Bonney. During World War II\, it became a major airbase for the famous US Sixth Army\, staged at Camp Columbia (Wacol) which operated under General MacArthur. Archerfield also operated and repaired aircraft from the RAAF\, the Royal Navy and units of the Netherlands East Indies forces. \nThe Dutch relation with Archerfield started soon after the opening of the airport in 1931 when mail and passenger flights started to operate. There was enormous enthusiasm from the people of Brisbane when in 1934 the Dutch airplane De Uiver landed here after the London to Melbourne air race. \nThe Netherlands East Indies (NEI) – now Indonesia – was invaded by the Japanese in 1942. Brisbane consequently became the home of the NEI Government-in-Exile. Archerfield became the major airport for the Dutch war effort. It provided employment for hundreds of Dutchies and Brisbanites alike\, allowing many Dutch-Australian friendship and businesses contacts to be developed. The picture made at the farewell of the Dutch Transport Squadron in 1947 shows this deep relationship. \nThe American\, Australian\, British and Dutch WWII history of the aerodrome has largely been forgotten. With the opening of the Heritage Room\, the airport is ensuring that this will not happen. Please join us for presentations and a tour along the exhibits. \n\nPeter Dunn OAM will provide an overview of the WWII history of the airport.\nPaul Budde from the Dutch Australian Cultural Centre will present its Dutch history.\n\nThe number of people in the Heritage Room  is strictly limited to 30\, so please book early. We kindly ask you to provide a donation for Dutchlink Brisbane\, the organiser of the event. Early birds $10 after 30 June $15 (+ small Eventbrite charge). \nPlease click here for bookings.

SUMMARY:Exploring Brisbane’s bike paths in orange
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThe Dutch are well known across the globe for a long list of things\, with fanatic cyclists being one of the things highest up on that list. Therefore\, with Brisbane City Council creating an excellent network of bike paths across the city\, it wouldn’t come as a surprise that the Dutch were among the first to jump on their bikes to use the network for commuting\, shopping and fun! \nWith beautiful cycling weather coming up\, the DCCQ is organising a recreational bike tour along the river and through the city of Brisbane to promote the use of this great network of bike paths. \nThe tour will be led by the Honorary Consul of the Netherlands Marjon Wind and the President of the DCCQ Ralph Vossenberg. The journey is about 10 km\, which will take about 45 minutes. We advise that if children take part in the tour\, they should be confident on their bicycle.  \nEvery participant is encouraged to join with an orange bike and/or outfit to make this event a colourful spectacle! Apart from eternal glory in the Dutch community\, there will also be a price for the person who rides on the most remarkable bike and for the person with the most sensational outfit. \nThe Program\n8.30am – 9.00am       Gathering at Captain Burke Park\, Kangaroo Point\n9.00am – 9.45am       Bike tour\n9.45am – 11.00am     Social gathering\n \nPricing\nDCCQ Members            Free\nNon-DCCQ members     Free\n \nRegister for the event here. SUMMARY:La Niña\, the effect of weather on flood-sensitive SE Queensland
DESCRIPTION:Weather in SE Queensland\, what is the future after this year with La Niña?\nHow did you go during the heavy rains in early April? Was this “just a lot of water coming down”\, or did it bring back memories of the serious floods in Brisbane 10 years ago? \nLa Niña is a period when the oceans around Australia are warmer than normal which enhances the evaporation and moisture to the atmosphere. It was building up in the first few months of 2020 but is now returning to normal weather conditions. \nLuckily we didn’t have the heavy conditions this year as we did back in 2011. Despite this\, Brisbane and Queensland remain vulnerable for extreme weather conditions and the effects they have on our region. For the Dutch Chamber of Commerce this is an interesting topic\, as The Netherlands has a long history of fighting the water. \nWe have invited three specialist guest speakers who will shine their light on how Brisbane and SE Queensland have dealt with the extreme wet weather conditions in the past\, and what we can expect in the future. \nPiet Filet will explore the journey of Brisbane – from an opportunistic settlement to now a City on a floodable floodplain. Does the community build to defend\, adapt or retreat? Piet will discuss the options and the choices we need to make to transition over the next 100 years to a safe and resilient community. \nWilliam Prentice will share his experience on the evolution of flood risk management over the past decade\, and how flood modelling helps the industry better understand flood hazards and effectively prevent\, prepare for and respond to flood events. William will provide insights to what is known about current and future flood hazards and opportunities for sustainable floodplain management. \nCharlotte Spliethoff will talk about flood risk management in the broader context of disaster resilience and the role of the government in this space. She will also talk about how this fits within the strategic policy agenda from the local to the global level. \nThe Program\n5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. \n6.00pm – 6.10pm    Welcome\n6.05pm – 6.30pm    Piet Filet\n6.30pm – 6.55pm    William Prentice\n6.55pm – 7.15pm    Networking\n7.15pm – 7.40pm    Charlotte Spliethoff\n7.40pm – 8.00pm    Q&A with panel\n8.00pm – 8.45pm      Networking \nOur Speaker\nPiet Filet Engagement and Collaboration Specialist at International Water Centre \nPiet Filet is an Engagement Collaboration Specialist currently working out of Griffith University where he convenes two practitioners’ networks – one on flood resilience building and another on the use of water modelling tools. He his early career was in agricultural ecology\, then moved to local government where all things water became a focus. \nWilliam Prentice Technical Director\, Flood Risk at Jeremy Benn Pacific (JBPacific) \nWilliam Prentice is a flood risk management specialist with over 12 years’ experience in the private and public sectors. Working across Australia and internationally\, he has delivered over $500m of strategic floodplain management and community resilience projects\, $400m of flood infrastructure planning and $25m of disaster resilience and recovery works. William has been awarded two National Emergency Medals for the 2010/11 Brisbane Floods and 2017 Logan River floods and is an Executive of Floodplain Management Australia – the industry body responsible for advocacy and development of best practice floodplain management across Australia. \nCharlotte Spliethoff Manager Flood Risk Policies and Projects at Queensland Reconstruction Authority \nCharlotte Spliethoff started her career in the Netherlands designing levees. She moved to Brisbane in 2012\, where she joined Royal Haskoning DHV leading all their water-related activities in Queensland. Between 2013-2015 she was the local liaison officer for the Dutch Partners in International Business covenant to promote collaboration between the Netherlands and Queensland on delta management. Charlotte started with QRA in November.

SUMMARY:Business Networking Borrel
DESCRIPTION:Come and get to know the DCCQ\nThe DCCQ aims to build connections between organisations and people based in both the Netherlands and Queensland. As good Dutch practice dictates\, what better way is there to get to know each other over a ‘borrel’? \nEvery first Thursday of the month\, members and any interested parties gather for an evening of networking. To discover how they can help each other find and develop new opportunities\, all the while building connections between Queensland and the Netherlands. \nIf would like to add value to this network\, or if you simply want to connect with an interesting group of people\, please join us at the Bavarian. We’ll even throw in some free Pretzels! \nHope to see you there!
