The Dutch Chamber of Commerce Queensland welcomes the appointment of Guido Tielman as Consul-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sydney, commencing in September 2026.
Tielman succeeds Hugo Klijn, who concluded his appointment at the end of July. In his new role, he will lead the Consulate-General’s work in Sydney, including consular services for Dutch citizens and support for trade and investment between the Netherlands and Australia.
An experienced international diplomat
Tielman brings more than three decades of international diplomatic experience to the role. Before his appointment to Sydney, he spent five years as Representative of the Netherlands Office Taipei, where he worked to strengthen cooperation between the Netherlands and Taiwan across trade, investment, innovation and culture.
His career has included postings with Dutch representations in Brussels, North Macedonia, Chongqing and Mumbai, alongside several roles within the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. His professional focus has included European affairs and promoting Dutch trade and investment in Asia.
During his time in Taipei, Tielman was particularly active in developing economic and innovation partnerships. Areas of cooperation included water management, offshore wind, circular economy, semiconductors, cybersecurity and agriculture.
Looking ahead to Australia
His appointment comes at an interesting time for Dutch–Australian relations, with growing opportunities for collaboration in areas including energy transition, technology, innovation and sustainable business.
Tielman’s Queensland engagement is already set to begin. He has been announced as the Opening Keynote Speaker at the Low-Carbon Energy & Fuel Supply Chains Forum in Queensland on 8 October 2026, where he will speak on “Supporting Hydrogen Demand in the Netherlands” and explore the role of international collaboration and future hydrogen markets in accelerating the energy transition.
For Queensland’s Dutch-Australian business community, his arrival provides an opportunity to further strengthen connections between Dutch expertise, investment and innovation and the opportunities emerging across the Queensland economy.
